Tagata Pasifika visit to our class

Today was a very special day because Tagata Pasifika was coming to our class to have a look at budgeting and what we think Christmas means to us.

It was a Onner to get choosen out of 24 other classes. As they film snippets of us, some were doing there gifted cards and some were doing there Christmas decorations to give as a present for there family members.

As they went around our classroom Osone Okesene the presenter came and sat next to to Tule and I. he told us that he was going to interview us about what we think Christmas and how important it is to us also budgeting like buying expensive gifts or making our own kind of gifts.

The interview went on and I got to say it was pretty unexpected. He asked questions that I kinda had to think about before answering it. I answered all of the questions but to admit some were pretty hard but at least I answered.

It was really great to have them in our class and hope we get another opportunity like this again.

Netbook Reflection

Something amazing happened this year at Pt England school. Students from year 5 to 8 were given their very own netbook to use through out the year. We were also allowed to take it during the holidays. We started taking them in the middle of the year, but first we had to attend meetings with our parents and sign contracts.

The thing I like about our netbooks is that we don't need to use books and pencil to write or to use for any other subject. Also to save us mucking around every morning looking for stuff to use instead we can just take out our net books and use anytime.

I also like taking it home because normally with out the netbook I'll will be watching tv all the time. But now I'm just in the room finishing homework and work from school. Which is cool because I won't get lecture from my teacher if I don't finish of work.

But one of the things I dislike about it is that sometimes the internet can be slow or stop working. Which can be frustrating sometimes because you really want to finish off some work.

But overall after having it from the begging of the year I felt like that my learning has improve and that it was very easier way to help us in learning.

Halloween

What is Halloween?
I thought that Halloween was a American thing! I thought they only celebrate that kind of thing to be honest. Also I always hear rumours that Halloween is bad because u are celebrating Satins birthday, which I think is not true.

Yesterday was Halloween. But I didn't go Trick or Treating. I just stayed home like what some of my friends did. My younger brother went with some of his friends. They went trick or treating around our neighbourhood. When they came back they had arrived with no lollies because they had already eaten it when they were walking back home.

No one really came knocking on our doors. But I got to say I was kind of happy because we didn't really had any candy's because we weren't that organised. Also not that much people went trick or treating around our area.

I wished I went trick or treating to see how fun it is especially when you have to dress up in funky costume and go knocking on other people door saying "trick or treat"

Do you celebrate Halloween?

The most intence game ever

“OMG” Aron cruden has injured his leg during the RWC final game against France.

I was sitting in front of the TV watching the game if excitement hoping that the All Blacks will win! But I new they were going too based on the game score they had before. It was a very intense game. but the relief thing was that the All Blacks had scored the first points. Now was time for Piri Weepu to kick the penalty kick. Unfortunately he missed which was a abit of a disappointing.

I got to say it was a pretty close game and the score was 8-7. The mighty All blacks have won the RWC for 2011.

Thinking skills

This morning Room 22 did a thinking task. We were spit into groups of 3 and the people that were in mine was Kaiden and Lepa and I. We also got given a problem and five objects. With those objects we had to use it to solve the problem.

The problem was; there was a leak in our tent and we had to use the objects which was: a light bulb, pair of glasses, spade, rock and can opener to solve the problem. To do this we tried to think logical and creative.

To solve this we used the one of the lends on the glasses to cover the hole and than we cut a bit of string of the tent and than tied it over the lends so it won' t fall of. But than we ended but having 3 hole with only one hole covered.

I got to say this was abit challenging but our group did not succeed but I can say I cant wait to do this again. Hopefully we will try and succeed.

When the Tongan rugby team have landed at the Auckland airport there was alot of supporters that had swamp the airport. It was like a sea of red and white people. It was so amazing to see alot of supporters.

The rugby world cup had started and the first game was Tonga vs All Black. It was a pretty tough game. The overall score was 41-10.

New Zealand Champions

Has your school entered your Rugby 7s team in the NZ Aims tournament? Our school has. This was the first time ever that our rugby 7's team went down to represent our school. They had left on the 28th of August and stayed there for a week and had came back on a Friday evening.

Also they trained very hard and won all there 12 games which was awesome. But the best thing was that they came back with the winning cup and had took out the whole competition. They became the New Zealand Champions. I was so happy for them and they made us proud. We even had a special assembly to welcome them back.

I was so proud of them and happy that I go to this school so I can say that we are the champions.

Global Community

Learning about people in global community is really important because you need to understand how other people do things their way, for example how other cultures may have to cover up when they go out in public. You might even want to know how other cultures like to celebrate their traditions differently because you might celebrate it differently to how they do.

Team 5 fun challenge

“Errrrrrrrr errrrrrrrrrr,” Mrs Nua pressed the button on the siren which was a sign for us to move on to another activity. What activity am I talking about you might ask? On Tuesday after Morning tea we had to get change into our PE gear because we were having a team 5 fun challenge down at the bottom field. Each teacher from team 5 had a activity ready for us.

The first activity was with my teacher. Her activity was that we had this long kind of sling shot that two people had to hold at each end. Then the whole class had to line up. When it is your turn you have to grab a ball and place it in the middle of the sling shot. After placing the ball you then have to try and aim it to land in one of the hula hoops that were place any where in the area that we were playing in. Also if a ball lands in one of the hula hoops you score points for your class and who ever has the most points gets to play water balloons after lunch time.

My Favourite activity was with Mrs Nua. We had to split into 4 groups and have two buckets each. One bucket of water at the front with a big lump of sponge in it and one at the back that was empty. After that we had to line up in between the two buckets. The front person has to try and soak the sponge and pass it to the person at the back and go over and side. Then the back person has to then run to the the bucket that was behind them and squeeze the sponge so that the water can come out. Also the bucket that has the most water wins.

I really had a fun day and was pretty excited for after lunch because my class won and we get to play water balloon fight. I am also hoping that we get more of these fun challenge during the year.

A awesome session of Badminton

As soon as the second bell rang room 22 was lined up outside getting ready to have a session of badminton. Our instructor was a lady called Laureen who was from the Auckland Badminton Club.

We did lots of different activies. The first activity was to learn how to control the shuttle by hitting it gently with the badminton racket, which kind of looked just like a tennis racket. It was really hard at first but when I got the hang of it, it was starting to be easy to handle.

Out of all the activies that we did my favourite one was trying to hit the shuttle into the bin, which was in the middle of the hall. We had to grab 5 shuttles each and take five steps back from the bin which also formed a circle. After that we all had to hit it in. This was also helping us how to serve.

The session was really fun I also learned how to do cool tricks like trying to hit it under your legs. I look forward for the next sessions.

The design Process Furniture for the street

As part of our topic Bigger Better Faster stronger, Ms Tito had given us a task and it was also about going through the design process. To start it off we had to identify a need within the senior block. Our need was about the student not respecting the street. So to fix it we had to come up with a solution to fix the problem. The solution that we came up with was to build furniture for our area so that the street becomes a place where the seniors will love and respect. Also that it won’t affect the stakeholders.

The next part to the design process was to research. We used our notebooks to get online to research some cool ideas with what we are building. Also we had to think about the important attribute such as Is it safe, innovative, practical, creative and size. As we researched our ideas we also reflect on the ideas that we research and by reflecting on it we did a P.M.I chart which stands for Positive Minus Interesting.

After all the research we did we than had to generate our ideas by taking our favourite designs and modifying it so that it becomes our own. We also had make sure that it was Creative, Innovated, Practical and if we wanted to we could also visualize some ideas that we wanted to design. As I was generating I was also evaluating at the same time.

The part that I’m up to now is Finding solution. I am making a prototype so that I can find the problems of making it and with the problems that I find I then change it so that it becomes practical to make.

This is where I am up to, I also feel good that I will get the things that needs to be done by the end of this term.

League Session

On Thursday the 22nd of June 2011, room 22 had a opportunity to have a league session with Sio Siua Taukeiaho. He plays for the 2011 Vodafone Junior Warrior squad. We did alot of cool activity’s.

One of the activity that we did during the session was, Sio Siua split us up into 4 groups and each group had to line up on there own line of cones. After that the person in front of the line has to hold onto a league ball and then has to zig zag through the people that are lined up. Once they zig zag through all the people that person then has to sprint back to the yellow line and place the ball down like getting a try. This was also a competition against the other groups.

I had a go at doing it and I got to say it was fun and a bit hard at the same time trying to zig zag through people.

To finish off the session we had a fun game called kick tennis and it’s was also my favourite activity. One of the groups had to combine with one of the other group and that was the same for the other two groups. Then we ended up with 2 groups. We were given 3 balls each. With those 3 balls we had to kick the ball to the other team but above there shoulders. When the ball goes over to the other team they are meant to catch it and then kick it back to the opposite team. Not to mention there were also rules and they were if you don’t catch the ball you are out, If you move away from the ball when its coming towards you, you are out and also with you kick the ball to low you are also out.

I really enjoyed the league session and I hope we have another opportunity like this.

The science roadshow

Last week on Thursday the 9th of June 2011 the year 7 & 8 walked down to Tamaki College for a science roadshow. This was meant to help us get a better understanding of our new topic for this term which is Bigger, Better, Faster and Stronger. There were lot of awesome exhibit to look at.

As I said before we were split into groups of six, I was also one the people that were leaders. The people that were in my group were Maree Michael, Rose and Ilalio. As we got there the leaders had to go and and choose a exhibit from the following area to report about. The exhibit that I chose to do was about Heat. One of the theme in the exhibit was about heat and colour and thats what my group chose to report about. The things that was included in this exhibit was that you had to push this button so that the lights turns and then you had to watch the sensitive panels and see what it does.

From this exhibit I found out that the light bounces of the colour that is heat sensitive. For example, Black grabs all the heat and nothing bounces off and colour says I grab some heat and bounce some off. Also I think that the science idea demonstrated that the different colour absorbs different amount of heat.

After studying the exhibit that we chose to report about, I decided then to go around and and experience some of the other science road show. My Favourite one was the Magic Hand. You had to Put your hand on one of the round theremin, then you had to move your hand around on the other round theremin and it will make a sound.

I really enjoyed the science roadshow and it also helped me get a better understanding of our topic. I also hope we get to do this kind of thing next year!

Swimming

For the last two weeks during lunch times, the year 7 & 8 had swimming lessons, down at the Glen Innes YMCA pools. We would always walk because it wasn’t a long way to get there. Also the reason why we had swimming lessons is so that we know how to swim because the country that I live in is surrounded by water which is called New Zealand.

I didn’t go swimming because of some medical reasons. But I do know how important swimming lessons are. Swimming lessons are important because it helps builds your swimming skills and it’s also important for survival and emergency.

As I said before why I didn’t go swimming because of some medical reasons, but I still wanted to go swimming because every time I look at them swimming it looked fun and it also made want to go swimming next time we have swimming lessons.

I was a bit disappointed because I missed out all of the important swimming lessons. But there is still next time.

Geometry

Imagine you are in a class, about to learn about geometry and you know nothing about it or even what it all about. Well You are in luck because room22 has has been learning all about geometry.

This term room22 has been learning all about geometry. Geometry is the study of size, shape and position of 2 dimensional shape and 3-D figures.

These last 2 weeks of geometry we did a whole lot of different activity. Some of the activity’s that were cool was drawing perfect circles using a compass and making tangrams. The activity that I mostly enjoyed was drawing perfect circles. I liked doing that activity because I love colouring.

I don’t really love geometry but when I did all the fun activity’s it made want to learn even more about geometry.

Taonga time

Here is my taonga time teacher

Here is what we are learning how to use properly

Every Fridays for an hour and a half the year 7&8 has a special time called taonga time. If you don’t know what I mean by taonga time taonga is the Maori word for treasure. The reason why we have Taonga time so it gives students opportunity to learn new stuff of teachers passion. For example my teachers passion is ICT.

The group that I am in is with Mrs Tele’a and her passion is ICT. She is teaching us how to use Imovie 2011 properly and how to make our movie alot more interesting. The things that she has taught us already is how to make our audience watch some more of our movie by changing camera angles.

These last few weeks of taonga time has been fun. I enjoyed learning all about how to use Imovie 2011 and also about all the different ways of how you could film ( camera angles).

My Values DLO term one

Last term Ms Tito gave us a task. The task that we got given was to create a digital learning object that explains or present one of the Pt England values. The value that I have chosen to share is about hope. Here is a little silde show that I have created in picasa and that also explains what I think hop[e feels like sounds and looks like.

1st netball session

On Thursday the 5th room22 had there very first netball session with one of the netball helpers called Emma. We have it every Thursday after lunch from 2 o'clock to 2.40 at our school netball court outside the stuff room.

Our first netball session, we did a whole lot of dynamic stretches. We did bum flicks, high knees and also the grape vine. After learning all these dynamic stretches I can use them when I’m getting ready for my netball game or when I’m training.

To finsh of our session we had a good game of corner ball. Corner ball is smiliar to netball but instead of 7 players we split into two team of 16 players. Also to score a goal a player from each team had to jump into the corner that was surrounded by small cones and catch the ball. The game was fun and it also went well.

Our session went well and I also enjoyed it. I really can’t wait for our next session.

Creativity

In room22 we have been learning about creativity. Creativity is a thinking skill. It also the ability to create new things in life with also the different form of imagination. For example you could create new ideas be inspired and have that vision.

Our teacher Ms Tito gave us a task to be creative. We had to design our name and make it look creative. With my name I just took screen shot of intersting letters of the internet and put my name together.

Term 1 reflection

One of the things I was pleased with last term was my art. In my report I obtained 2 excellent for work habits and behaviour. I was shocked because I don’t like doing art and I’m also not good at art, but to see that I received 2 excellence comments It made me want to do more art.

The subject that I really want to improve on is my writing. In my report I gained a below expectation for academic progress. I felt disappointed but that made me want to improve more and not be distracted from my work.

Overall, I had a happy term1 and was also pleased with the result in my report.

These are my results for my DLO:
